What Is Enrichment-Oriented Pet Care?
Enrichment-oriented pet care is an approach to pet sitting and dog walking that intentionally supports a pet's physical, mental, sensory, social, and emotional needs during their care visit.
Instead of asking only, “Did the dog get walked?” or “Did the cat get fed?”, enrichment-oriented care also considers questions such as:
What does this pet naturally enjoy?
What helps them feel comfortable and confident?
Do they need movement, mental stimulation, decompression, or rest today?
What motivates them?
What environments or activities seem overwhelming?
What behaviors tell us they are engaged—or that they have had enough?
The goal is not to keep your pet constantly busy.
The goal is to make their time intentional, individualized, and appropriate for the pet in front of me that day.
The Paw by MC Approach to Enrichment Care starts with observation.
Your pet cannot complete a questionnaire after every visit and tell me exactly what worked.
Their behavior can.
During visits, I pay attention to your pet's body language, preferences, engagement, energy level, environment, and response to different activities. Over time, those observations can help create a more useful picture of what your pet actually enjoys.
That may mean discovering that your dog loves scent-based games but loses interest in repetitive fetch.
Or that your cat becomes significantly more engaged when food is turned into a hunting activity instead of simply placed in a bowl.
Or that an older pet benefits most from quiet companionship, gentle exploration, and predictable routines rather than high-energy activity.
Enrichment should adapt to the pet—not force the pet to adapt to the enrichment.
What Types of Enrichment Can Be Used During Pet Care?
Depending on your pet, the service booked, owner authorization, available time, and what is appropriate that day, enrichment may include activities such as:
Sniffing & Foraging
Sniff walks, treat searches, scatter feeding, snuffle activities, food puzzles, and other opportunities that allow pets to use their natural scenting and foraging behaviors.
Problem-Solving
Simple puzzles, treat-dispensing toys, hide-and-seek games, choice-based activities, and age-appropriate challenges that encourage pets to think and investigate.
Movement & Play
Fetch, tug, chase-style games, movement circuits, exploratory walks, wand play for cats, or other appropriate ways to incorporate physical activity.
Calm & Decompression
Slow sniffing, licking, chewing, quiet observation, predictable routines, gentle interaction, or simply providing a calm presence for pets who benefit from lower-arousal activities.
Sensory Exploration
Safe exposure to different textures, scents, sounds, environments, objects, or experiences appropriate to the individual pet.
Confidence & Choice
Giving pets appropriate opportunities to investigate, participate, disengage, make simple choices, and interact without unnecessary pressure.
Social & Relationship Enrichment
Positive interaction with their caregiver through play, affection, cooperative activities, familiar routines, or simply spending meaningful time together.
Not every activity is appropriate for every pet—and not every pet needs every category of enrichment.
That is precisely the point.
Enrichment Is Individualized, Not Performative
A tired dog is not automatically an enriched dog.
And a pet does not need an elaborate activity at every visit for their care to be meaningful.
Sometimes the most appropriate enrichment is a long sniff through the neighborhood.
Sometimes it is five minutes of problem-solving followed by a nap.
Sometimes it is allowing a cautious cat to observe from across the room until they decide they are ready to interact.
And sometimes the best choice is to skip a planned activity because your pet's behavior says they need something different.
Paw by MC prioritizes the quality and appropriateness of the experience over simply checking an activity off a list.
Your Pet Helps Guide the Visit
One of the principles behind Paw by MC is simple:
The pet in front of me gets a vote.Owner instructions and established routines always provide the foundation for care. Within those boundaries, I also pay attention to what your pet communicates during the visit.
If they are excited and ready to engage, we may do more.
If they seem tired, uncomfortable, overstimulated, hesitant, or simply uninterested, the plan can change.
Enrichment is never intended to override your pet's welfare, preferences, physical limitations, behavioral needs, or veterinary guidance.
Participation should always be appropriate to the individual animal.
More Than “Keeping Them Busy”
Enrichment is sometimes described as something that prevents boredom.
That can be part of it—but the concept is much broader.
Thoughtful enrichment can provide opportunities for pets to:
express natural behaviors
use their senses
investigate their environment
make choices
engage their brains
move their bodies appropriately
experience novelty at a comfortable level
build positive associations
decompress
maintain familiar routines
enjoy meaningful interaction while their people are away
For pets receiving regular care, these observations can also help Paw by MC better understand what activities, routines, environments, and interaction styles appear to suit them best.
That knowledge can make future visits increasingly personalized.
Enrichment for Dogs
Dogs experience the world largely through movement, scent, exploration, social interaction, and problem-solving.
Depending on the dog, enrichment-oriented care might mean:
allowing extra sniffing during a walk rather than prioritizing distance
incorporating treat searches into a drop-in
practicing owner-approved cues during play
offering an appropriate chew or licking activity
turning part of a meal into a foraging experience
exploring a new walking route
incorporating short bursts of play
spending time outdoors watching the environment
adjusting the day's activity to the dog's energy level
For dogs who need more than a standard neighborhood visit, Paw by MC also offers dedicated Adventure experiences that provide opportunities for extended exploration and enrichment beyond the home.
Enrichment for Cats
Cats are sometimes overlooked when people talk about enrichment.
They should not be.
Cats have complex behavioral needs and can benefit from opportunities to stalk, chase, hunt, climb, investigate, scratch, forage, observe, hide, and interact at a level they find comfortable.
During cat drop-ins or house sitting, enrichment might include:
wand or prey-style play
treat hunts
food puzzles
environmental exploration
familiar toys rotated strategically
brushing or affection when welcomed
window watching
interactive play
cardboard, paper, or texture exploration
quiet companionship
And for some cats—particularly shy or cautious ones—respecting distance and allowing them to control the pace of interaction can itself be an important part of thoughtful care.
Enrichment for Senior Pets
Enrichment does not have an age limit.
It simply changes.
For senior dogs and cats, enrichment may focus more heavily on gentle movement, sensory engagement, predictable routines, simple food puzzles, sniffing, comfortable exploration, affection, observation, and activities adapted to mobility or health considerations.
The objective is never maximum exertion.
It is meaningful engagement at a level that makes sense for the individual pet.
Enrichment Can Look Different Every Day
Your pet's needs are not static.
Weather, sleep, health, age, household changes, excitement levels, environmental triggers, and even what happened earlier in the day can affect how they respond.
That is why Paw by MC does not promise that every visit will contain an identical enrichment activity.
Instead, I use your care instructions, established boundaries, and your pet's behavior to help determine what makes sense within the scheduled visit.
Consistency matters.
So does adaptability.
Building a Better Understanding of Your Pet
The longer I care for a pet, the more information becomes available.
Which toys consistently generate excitement?
Does your dog prefer sniffing to fast-paced walking?
Is your cat more motivated by movement or food?
Does your pet engage immediately, or do they need a transition period?
What activities seem calming?
What seems frustrating or overstimulating?
Those small observations matter.
Paw by MC is developing a more structured approach to capturing these patterns through individualized pet profiles so that care can become increasingly tailored over time.
The long-term goal is simple:
Know the pet better so I can care for the pet better.
Is Enrichment Included in Paw by MC Visits?
Enrichment-oriented care is part of the Paw by MC service philosophy.
Appropriate interaction, engagement, observation, and personalization are incorporated into care whenever possible within the service booked.
Some activities require additional time, equipment, transportation, preparation, or a dedicated service and may therefore be offered separately or as an add-on.
For example, a 30-minute drop-in may include a short treat search or play session after essential care needs are completed, while a more extensive enrichment experience may be better suited to a longer visit or dedicated Adventure.
The distinction is important:
You do not have to purchase an “enrichment add-on” for me to think about your pet as an individual.
The Paw by MC Standard
Paw by MC was built for pet parents who want more than someone simply entering the home, completing a checklist, and leaving.
My approach combines reliable care with observation, thoughtful engagement, communication, and individualized attention.
That means enrichment is considered alongside the fundamentals:
feeding.
fresh water.
medications when applicable.
walks and potty needs.
litter and household care.
safety.
comfort.
routine.
And the question that ties it all together:
What would make this visit better for this particular pet?
